| Steering
Committee
Ccomposed of two Co-Chairs, a Vice-Chair, a Recording
Secretary and a Treasurer, the Steering Committee’s members
are the only ones elected. Elections for the one-year term are
held according to the organization’s by-laws. The committee
is charged with setting overall goals for the year and developing
the agenda for each of the twelve monthly general membership meetings.
The Steering Committee coordinates activities of the other committees.
SP&J
members are encouraged to join one or more of the following committees.
In addition, a new committee may be formed to pursue member(s)’
interests, as long as the goals and activities of the committee
are compatible with those of the organization and a majority of
the membership at a general meeting votes to create it. Non-members
are welcome to attend any of our meetings.
The
main objectives of each of the committees are as follows. Since
many objectives overlap, two or more committees often work together
to achieve a particular goal.
COCOA--Committee
on Community Outreach & Activities – is dedicated
to putting a public face on the peace & justice movement by
holding vigils, mostly in Liberty, but also occasionally at other
locations together with groups such as Waynepeace from PA. Group
discussion follows the vigils. The committee also organizes buses
to rallies in NYC & Washington DC and is responsible for signage
that projects unity within the movement. COCOA creates a calendar
of community events in which Sullivan P & J participates by
providing literature and buttons to promote our organization and
the objectives we support.
Education
– This committee’s work is focused on providing the
general public with information about pertinent peace, justice,
economic and social issues through forums, film festivals, theater
presentations, discussions, brochures and the newsletter. Members
of the committee also help other committees promote their agendas
and disseminate their information.
Environment
Committee
The goal of the Environment Committee is to acquaint SP&J
members with the natural resources and recreational possibilities
available in our area and to raise awareness of issues that negatively
impact our environment. Members also serve as liaisons between
SP&J and other environmental groups in the region so we can
work together to protect our natural resources. Members are encouraged
to attend town meetings to keep informed about economic development
and community planning in their respective towns.
FUN
– (Officially Membership & Finance)
This committee encourages new membership, organizes special events
such as Receptions, Music for Peace Concerts, an annual Potluck
and the annual Peace & Justice Awards Luncheon.
PAC
- (The Political Action Committee)
No longer active. However, it spawned Casino-Free Sullivan County
and Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development (SASD). Many
members of SP&J are involved in these organizations and others
that promote voter registration or specific local, state and national
initiatives that are compatible with our mission statement.
